WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congresswoman Laura Gillen (NY-04) released a statement following President Trump's announcement that he would remove Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem from office:
"Secretary Kristi Noem's tenure as Homeland Security Secretary has been nothing short of a disaster. Under her failed leadership, U.S. citizens have been killed at the hands of federal agents, trust in our law enforcement has been eroded and our communities' safety has been jeopardized. She showed a contemptible disregard for her fundamental responsibility to keep the American people safe.
"I'm proud to have helped lead the charge calling for Noem's removal and urging Speaker Johnson and Chair Jordan to begin impeachment proceedings immediately. She should have never been confirmed as head of DHS and was fired not a second too soon. Now, she must continue to answer for her disastrous and deadly period in office.
"The next Homeland Security Secretary must right Noem's wrongs and work with Congress to quickly enact reforms and accountability for ICE, extend TPS for our Haitian communities and restore order at our largest law enforcement agency."
