WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), chairman of the Senate Republican Policy Committee (RPC), spoke at the Senate Republican Leadership press conference in support of the SAVE America Act.
Senator Capito's remarks as delivered:
"I come from rural America, West Virginia, where we have a great sense of accountability, fairness, and commonsense-and this is commonsense.
"We already have a voter ID law in the state of West Virginia. It's easy to vote early with it, however you wish to vote with your voter ID. It makes a lot of sense and makes sure that whoever is presenting the ballot is actually that person and eliminates the fraud.
"On the non-citizens voting or illegals voting, to me, if that's 90 percent, it should be 100 percent. The precious right to vote in this country is something that's earned as an American citizen… I think we have to respect that and the common sense tells me that proof of citizenship does just that.
"I look forward to the debate today and through the rest of the week...because this is an important issue to the American people because of that fundamental right to vote that we all share."
