Monmouth University has successfully completed the largest fundraising campaign in its history, raising nearly $190 million to advance academic excellence, expand educational access, strengthen the University's endowment, and support major investments in the student experience.
Excellence. Access. Ambition. The Campaign for Monmouth University concluded June 30 after raising $188.5 million in commitments, surpassing its $175 million goal by 8%. More than 20,000 donors contributed during the seven-year campaign, which began July 1, 2019.
"This extraordinary result reflects the generosity and confidence of thousands of alumni, families, friends, and partners who believe deeply in Monmouth University and in the promise of our students," said Monmouth University President Patrick F. Leahy. "Their support has helped transform this institution at a remarkable moment in its history and has positioned us to pursue even greater levels of academic excellence and educational access in the years ahead."
The University publicly launched the $175 million campaign in December 2024 as the philanthropic counterpart to its five-year strategic plan, also named Excellence. Access. Ambition. At the time, Leahy described the campaign as a means of accelerating Monmouth's goal of becoming a national leader in integrating academic excellence and educational access.
The campaign supported three broad priorities: strengthening academic excellence and student access through endowment, supporting learning opportunities through annual giving, and enhancing campus facilities.
Among the campaign's most significant achievements was the expansion of scholarship support. A $21 million anonymous gift announced in 2023 - the largest single philanthropic commitment in University history - established a scholarship program for high-achieving undergraduate students with financial need. The campaign also resulted in the creation of 72 new endowed scholarships and 79 new endowed funds.
Campaign support helped advance academic programs, faculty support, and campus improvements, including the entirely donor-funded Bruce Springsteen Center for American Music, which opened to international acclaim in June 2026 as a new home for the University's growing collection, scholarship, and programming devoted to American music.
Other campus improvements included substantial upgrades to student residence halls, renovation of the Stafford Student Center, transformation of Nagy Common, a new police headquarters supported by improved access roads, the addition of study and community areas in the Great Hall, as well as critical upgrades to the electrical systems of the historic campus landmark.
Campaign Chairs Joan D. Mercer and Henry D. Mercer, III '87, '17HNAcross all campaign priorities, donors committed approximately $50.9 million to academic programs and faculty support, $47.4 million to scholarships and financial aid, and substantial additional support for University infrastructure, athletics, student organizations, and other institutional priorities.
Joan and Henry Mercer, who served as co-chairs of the campaign, said its success reflected the breadth of the Monmouth community's commitment to the University's future.
"From the beginning, this campaign asked the Monmouth community to think ambitiously about what this University could become," the Mercers said. "The response exceeded even those goals. We are deeply grateful to every donor whose generosity strengthened opportunities for students, supported our faculty, and helped build a stronger foundation for Monmouth's future."
The campaign unfolded during a period of significant institutional progress for Monmouth.
In 2025, the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education recognized Monmouth as a Research College and University, reflecting the growth of faculty and student research activity. That same year, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education reaffirmed the University's accreditation for eight years with no requirements or recommendations and 12 commendations across areas including academic programs, student support, governance, and institutional resources.
Monmouth also continued to earn national recognition for educational quality, affordability, and student outcomes. Money magazine again included the University among its Best Colleges in America in 2026, using measures that include quality, affordability, graduation outcomes, and the value an institution adds to student success. Monmouth rose to its highest national ranking ever on the Wall Street Journal/College Pulse 2026 Best Colleges list, taking the No. 3 spot among private universities in New Jersey.
Soon after the completion of the campaign, Monmouth University was recognized by U.S. News & World Report as a National University, after years of climbing steadily in the regional Master's North category.
Taken together, the milestones reflect the central ambition that guided both the strategic plan and the campaign: advancing academic quality while keeping a Monmouth education accessible to students from a wide range of economic backgrounds.
"When we adopted Excellence. Access. Ambition., we set a bold goal for Monmouth: to demonstrate that academic distinction and broad educational opportunity can and should advance together," Leahy said. "The success of this campaign has given us resources to move that vision forward, but its greatest significance lies in what those resources make possible - for our students, our faculty, and the generations who will follow them."
Campaign commitments came from donors in all 50 states and 25 countries. The campaign generated more than 114,000 gifts and payments from alumni, parents, friends, corporations, foundations, and other supporters.
As Monmouth prepares for its next strategic chapter, Leahy said the campaign's conclusion represents both a milestone and a foundation for continued progress. "The most fitting way to thank everyone who made this campaign possible is to build on what they have helped us accomplish," Leahy said. "Nearly $190 million in philanthropy represents an extraordinary vote of confidence in Monmouth University. We intend to honor that confidence by continuing to raise our aspirations for the University and, most importantly, for our students."
