The European Housing Alliance held its inaugural meeting in Brussels on 19 June, marking a critical step in implementing one of the priorities of the European Affordable Housing Plan adopted by the European Commission in December 2025.
Under the theme "From Principles to Practice", the hybrid event saw more than 120 participants present on the day, and 700 online representing all levels of the housing ecosystem from Member States, regions, cities and housing stakeholders.
Commissioner for Energy and Housing Dan Jørgensen opened the meeting.
"Every one of you has joined this alliance because you recognise that housing is essential for the cohesion of our societies, the competitiveness of our economy and the stability of our democracy. And therefore, you know that the best way to take on this crisis is truly unity of Europe. The same unity that has got us through so many other crises before."
At the event speakers discussed their expectations and practical needs to finalise the roll-out of the Housing Alliance. Participants identified their top priority topics and discussed ways to work together on co-creation and policy change to turn the plan's goals into concrete action.
Principles of the Alliance were also discussed including: subsidiarity drawing on benefits of multi-level governance; openness and inclusive participation; flexible, adaptable and focused on substance and combining political and expert level cooperation and connecting policy with realities on the ground.
By connecting all levels of governance, national, regional and local and leveraging existing programmes and synergies, the Alliance is harnessing housing expertise and best practice from across Europe to enable sharing and mutual learning.
The Alliance is an open platform to unite those with a stake in solving Europe's housing crisis. As of today more than 650 organisations have declared their interest to participate in the European Housing Alliance. Registration remains open and organisations can join at any time.
