Statement of the OAS Secretary General on Elections in Colombia

Following a conversation between the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Albert R. Ramdin, and the Head of the OAS Electoral Observation Mission in Colombia, Leonel Fernandez, the Secretary General congratulates President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella.

Colombia has once again demonstrated the strength of its democracy and institutions.

Secretary General Ramdin also congratulates the people of Colombia for the peaceful and orderly conduct of this electoral process and during the second round of the presidential election.

The OAS Secretary General reaffirms his commitment and full readiness to continue strengthening cooperation in support of democracy, institutional stability and the country's development. He looks forward to working closely with President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella and to continuing the valued partnership between Colombia and the OAS in advancing the shared goals of the Hemisphere.

The Secretary General also acknowledges the democratic attitude of candidate Ivan Cepeda Castro in accepting the electoral results.
