More than 100 golfers gathered Oct. 6 at the Country Club at Woodmore in Mitchellville, Maryland, for Bowie State University's 15th annual Bulldog Golf Classic. Blessed with beautiful weather, the event brought together alumni, corporate partners, university leaders and friends for a day of golf, fellowship and friendly competition in support of Bulldog student-athletes.
Generous sponsors included BGE, Elior, ABM, Southlake Marketplace, Crescent Cities Charities, Betty Turner, FedEx, PepsiCo, Pinkie Strothers, the R.I.S.E. Opportunity Foundation and Truist, along with other businesses, alumni and individual supporters.
Bowie State's golf team captured first place, with Zachary Alford, Jalen Brown, Whitley Shields and Paul Tumusiime earning top honors. The second-place team included Danny Jenkins, Mason Jones, Rickie Simmons and Tommy Simmons, while President Aminta H. Breaux, Maxine Chaplin, Scott Phillips and Trey Proctor secured third place.
Individual competition winners included Zachary Alford and Whitley Shields for Closest to the Pin; Taj Graham, Rosalind Muchiri and Justice Woodson for Longest Drive; and Natalie Borneo of the R.I.S.E. Opportunity Foundation for the Beat the Pro challenge.
More than a day on the greens, the Bulldog Golf Classic highlighted the power of philanthropy and community partnerships to create meaningful opportunities for Bowie State students and student-athletes. Proceeds from the event will support the Bowie State athletics department's goal of establishing an ongoing student scholarship program.
"We are deeply grateful to every sponsor, golfer and volunteer who made this year's classic a success," said Jolisa Williams, interim vice president of intercollegiate athletics and recreation.
"Fifteen years in, this event continues to grow, and so does our commitment to creating opportunities for Bulldog student-athletes in the classroom, in competition and beyond. As an auxiliary operation, Bowie State athletics does not receive state funding, making fundraising initiatives like the Bulldog Golf Classic essential to supporting our department's operations, enhancing student-athlete resources and investing in experiences that contribute to their overall success. The continued generosity of our supporters helps us provide the resources and opportunities our student-athletes need to thrive."
Bowie State extends its sincere appreciation to the golfers, sponsors, volunteers and supporters whose generosity and commitment made the event possible. Their continued investment reflects the spirit of Bulldog pride and the university's commitment to student achievement, both on and off the course.
