SACRAMENTO, CA -Governor Newsom signed AB 2803 (Valencia) into law, a significant step in preventing the misuse of campaign funds and further enhancing the integrity of campaign finance in California.

Under AB 2803, campaign funds will no longer be used to pay or reimburse any legal costs for charges involving public crimes or fraud. If candidates or elected officials use these funds and are later convicted, they are required to reimburse their campaign accounts. This measure ensures that campaign contributions are used ethically and in accordance with the donors' intent.

In a case brought forward by the FBI, former Anaheim Mayor Harry Sidhu was accused of soliciting $1 million in campaign contributions in exchange for confidential appraisal documents for the Anaheim Angels Stadium. Sidhu used $300,000 in campaign funds for his legal defense through his campaign committee "Harry Sidhu for Mayor 2022."

"This legislation is a crucial step in restoring public trust in the democratic process," said Assemblymember Avelino Valencia. "By preventing the misuse of campaign funds, AB 2803 ensures that contributions are used for their intended purpose reinforcing the ethical standards expected in public office.
