In accordance with this acknowledgement, we recognize:

Whereas, first established by the United Nations in 2001, World Refugee Day is recognized each year on June 20th to honor refugees and displaced people around the world; and

Whereas, World Refugee Day highlights the millions of people who seek safety from war, famine, climate disasters, religious and political oppression, and displacement around the world; and

Whereas, anyone can become a refugee and has the right to seek safety; and

Whereas, Portland is home to approximately 35,000 people who are internationally displaced: including refugees, asylum seekers, undocumented, and DACA-eligible; and

Whereas, each year, World Refugee Day is commemorated in Portland by simply showing up and walking together around the Portland waterfront toward a future that includes every-one; and

Whereas, this walk continues as a shared tradition for all who call Portland home, and all are invited to join us.

Now, therefore, I, Keith Wilson, Mayor of the City of Portland, Oregon, the "City of Roses," do hereby proclaim June 20, 2025, to be

World Refugee Day

in Portland and encourage all community members to join us in the free, family-friendly event.
