A 20-year legacy of leadership at NACDS earns the Association's most prestigious distinction.

At the Board of Directors Dinner during the 2026 National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) Annual Meeting, NACDS presented the celebrated Sheldon W. Fantle Lifetime Achievement Award to Steven C. Anderson, FASAE, CAE, IOM, president and chief executive officer of NACDS.

The award carries special significance this year: Anderson recently announced that he will retire as President and CEO at the end of 2026, concluding 20 years of service to the Association and the pharmacy industry. The Lifetime Achievement Award stands as a fitting capstone to a tenure defined by transformation - of NACDS and of pharmacy's standing in American healthcare.

NACDS Board Chair David B. Warner, president and chief executive officer of KPH Healthcare Services, Inc., captured the breadth of Anderson's tenure directly: "Before joining NACDS in 2007, National Journal described Steve as the "Mr. Fix-It" of trade associations. That description was exactly right. He arrived at NACDS at a pivotal moment - when change was not optional, but necessary. And not long after, the world was tested. A global financial crisis. Public health emergencies. Rapid technological transformation. Major policy shifts. A global pandemic. And most recently, meaningful progress on PBM reform at the federal level. Through it all, Steve led with clarity, steadiness, and purpose. So yes - he's "Mr. Fix-It." But for nearly two decades, he has been so much more."

Warner also reflected on Anderson's reflection of the highest ideals of the membership: "Throughout his career, Steve has made an enduring commitment to our industry. He has exemplified the very best of what each of our companies strives to do every day: to make a meaningful contribution, to make a difference, and to pursue excellence."

Anderson joined NACDS as President and CEO in 2007, bringing a distinguished record of leading national trade associations. Over nearly two decades, he steered NACDS through periods of stabilization, concentrated advocacy, and industry-wide challenge, including the COVID-19 pandemic, when retail pharmacies stepped forward to vaccinate and serve hundreds of millions of Americans at a moment of profound national need.

Under Anderson's leadership, NACDS became one of healthcare's most influential trade associations.

In accepting the award, Anderson spoke not of his own accomplishments, but of the industry that made them possible: "None of what we celebrate tonight belongs to one person. Every milestone we reached, every challenge we faced, every step forward we took - that was the work of NACDS members and leaders choosing, year after year, to come together and lead. That is what makes NACDS unique: retailers and suppliers, different business models, different strategies - and yet, when we walk into an NACDS meeting, we choose collaboration, because we believe in a mission bigger than ourselves."

He continued: "What I'm proudest of is not any one win - it's the pattern. The pattern of an association and an industry that, when the moment demanded it, stayed focused, stayed united, and delivered lasting impact."

He also took a moment to recognize the people behind that pattern - his family, NACDS members, Board of Directors members past and present, and NACDS staff: "I've never taken for granted what it means to work alongside people - staff and members alike - who care so deeply about doing the work the right way, for the right reasons. I will always be grateful to all of you. And I want to say something that feels especially true tonight. In this room, people aren't just colleagues. Over time, you become trusted friends - lasting friends. The relationships built through this work are rare and enduring."

The Sheldon W. Fantle Lifetime Achievement Award, established in 1989 and renamed in 1996, honors individuals with exceptional accomplishments and contributions to the chain drug industry - a distinction Anderson has now earned in full.
