VICTORIA - Premier David Eby has issued the following statement celebrating Nowruz:
"Communities in B.C., Canada and around the world are celebrating Nowruz, also known by some as the Persian New Year.
"Nowruz, which means 'new day' in Persian (Farsi), marks the arrival of spring. Family and friends gather around the Haft-Seen table, which is set with seven symbolic items representing hope, renewal and prosperity in the coming year.
"As well, poetry is read, gifts exchanged and festive meals shared. Another tradition is to jump over a fire, symbolizing a purging of the negative and beginning of a positive future. It is a day for reflection about the past and to look toward the future with hope and optimism.
"Many will find this year's celebrations difficult, as we pray for the safety of loved ones from violence in the Middle East and mourn those injured and killed by Iran's brutal regime simply for demanding basic human rights. The people of British Columbia stand in solidarity with the people of Iran demanding freedom and justice. British Columbians will always stand with the Iranian people for peace, freedom and democracy; we know the people will triumph in the end.
"I wish all celebrating Nowruz a happy and peaceful year. Norouzetan Pirouz!"
