HIGH RISK OF BLACK ICE EXPECTED OVERNIGHT; RESIDENTS URGED TO STAY OFF ROADS

Lafayette, LA - Lafayette Consolidated Government (LCG) is urging residents to take extreme caution as high chances of black ice are expected between 8:00 p.m. tonight and early afternoon tomorrow (Monday) due to freezing temperatures and lingering moisture on roadways.

Black ice is especially dangerous because it is often invisible to drivers and can form quickly on bridges, overpasses, shaded roadways, and less-traveled streets. LCG strongly encourages residents to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary, complete essential errands before conditions deteriorate, and prepare to hunker down through tomorrow morning.

LCG crews are actively taking measures to prepare for hazardous conditions, including pre-treating overpasses and areas adjacent to local hospitals and public safety facilities.

Residents are reminded to take the following winter safety precautions:

• Do not drip faucets. Conserving water helps support the overall water system during periods of high demand and cold stress.
• Protect exposed pipes and outdoor faucets by insulating or covering them.
• Bring pets indoors and check on elderly neighbors and family members.
• Avoid unnecessary travel and allow public safety and essential crews to operate safely.
