UW Cowboys Tie for First; Cowgirls Get Initial Rodeo Team Win

Both University of Wyoming rodeo teams produced wins at the Central Wyoming College (CWC) rodeo Sunday afternoon in Riverton.

The Cowboys tied for first with Casper College to win for the second time in as many outings during the five-rodeo fall season, while the Cowgirls won for the first time. Both UW teams scored 375 points during the weekend CWC rodeo.

With two rodeos under their belts, the Cowboys are nearing four digits in overall team points in the Central Rocky Mountain Region (CRMR). The UW men have 995 points to lead the T-Birds, who have 755 points, while Gillette College is third at 535.

In winning over the weekend, the Cowgirls solidified their second-place standing in the CRMR with 768.3 points to cut into first-place Gillette College's early lead. The Pronghorns have 923.3 points with three fall rodeos remaining. Colorado State University is a distant third at 295. Gillette College was second at CWC with 315 points.

Scoring for the six-man points team for the Cowboys at CWC were:

-- Colton Farrow continued his early success in bareback riding when he split first place. The Greybull rider came through with the best mark in the short go to boost him in the overall average.

-- Bodie Mattson, from Sturgis, S.D., combined with teammate Troupe Coors, of Loveland, Colo., to take the team roping title on the strength of two good rounds, including nailing the top time in the opener.

-- Rio Nutter, of Rapid City, S.D., scored first-round points in team roping but did not place in the average with partner Coy Johnson, from Gillette.

-- Dixon Tattrie, of Youngstown, Alberta, Canada, scored points in bull riding but did not place in the average.

Other Cowboys, who were not selected for the points team, placed at the CWC rodeo.

Jacob Wang, from Baker, Mont., split first place in steer wrestling. A pair of UW bull riders swept the top two spots: Stefan Tonita, from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, was the only rider to successfully record a pair of rides, and teammate Emmit Ross, of Jackson, split second place. Thayne Kimbrough, from Ohiowa, Neb., and partner Shelby Derner, of Laramie County Community College, were fourth in team roping, and Rowdy and Roan Weil, of Kersey, Colo., were sixth in the same event. Ty Brenna, from Keene, N.D., was sixth in saddle bronc riding.

UW second-year Coach Seth Glause says his team had a great weekend, and he adds that Farrow and Mattson led the way for the Pokes.

"They all performed well and took care of business in the short go Sunday," he says. "We need to stay focused and prepare for Sheridan this coming weekend."

All four Cowgirls on the points team scored at CWC:

-- Wheatland's Rayne Grant had barrel racing's top short go time, which earned her a split of first place in the overall average.

-- Josie Mousel, of Egan, S.D., secured the second-best times in two rounds of goat tying to place as the event's runner-up.

-- Riata Day, from Fleming, Colo., split third place in goat tying to add to the Cowgirls' overall team score.

-- Landry Haugen, of Sturgis, scored early-round team roping points, but she and partner Dalton Porch, of Gillette College, did not place in the average.

Other Cowgirls, who were not selected for the points team, placed at the weekend rodeo.

Olivia Lay, of Elbert, Colo., was the top breakaway roper at the CWC rodeo. Layni Stevens, from St. Lawrence, S.D., and Tate Talkington, of Northeastern Junior College, were the team roping runners-up, and teammates Hailey Hardeman, of Wilson, and Lilly Masopust, of Glenrock, were third. Stevens also split third place in goat tying and came through in her third event, splitting third place in breakaway roping with teammate Lucy Flynn, of Porterville, Calif. Stevens' strong weekend included winning the all-around title.

The women's team did a great job this past weekend, Glause says.

"They have been very consistent thus far into the season," he says. "We need to continue to prepare and be ready to give a winning effort in Sheridan."

Glause praises the efforts of Stevens and adds Tonita has been impressive in the early going of bull riding, having ridden all four bulls and appears to be "riding in top form."

The CRMR tour heads to the Sheridan College rodeo this weekend.
