County of Monterey Opens Evacuation Shelter for Timber Fire Evacuees

The County of Monterey, in collaboration with the American Red Cross, will open an emergency evacuation shelter this evening for residents displaced by the Timber Fire in Big Sur.

The shelter will open at 7:00 p.m. today, Monday, August 10, at Carmel Middle School, 4380 Carmel Valley Road, Carmel, CA 93923.

The shelter will remain open until evacuation orders associated with the Timber Fire in Big Sur have been lifted and evacuees are able to safely return home.

Shelter resident/guests will be provided with essential supplies and services, including:

• Food and snacks

• Drinking water

• Cots and blankets

• Comfort kits

• Assistance from American Red Cross and County of Monterey shelter personnel

The SPCA for Monterey County will also co-locate at the shelter to provide a dedicated sheltering area and support for evacuees with pets. Residents evacuating with animals are encouraged to bring their pets with them and, if possible, bring necessary pet food, medications, leashes, carriers and other essential supplies.

"We understand that being asked to leave your home-especially with little notice-is difficult and stressful," said Nick Pasculli, County Communications Director. "Our priority is to make sure people affected by the Timber Fire have a safe place to go and the support they need while evacuation orders remain in effect. We are grateful to the American Red Cross, the SPCA for Monterey County and our many community partners for coming together to care for our residents, their families and their pets."

The County reminds residents in evacuation areas to follow the direction of emergency officials and to remain alert for official updates regarding evacuation zones, road conditions and re-entry.
