Board of Natural Resources Votes to Remove Names of Problematic Army Officers, Restore Indigenous Titles
The state Board of Natural Resources has voted to restore traditional names to two mountain peaks near Wenatchee. The mountains in the Glacier Peak Wilderness of Chelan County had previously been named after U.S. soldiers who participated in the Yakama War of 1858 and were involved in the White River Massacre.
The peaks, formerly known as McCall Mountain and Crook Mountain, will be renamed to more closely align with the English translation of their Indigenous names, Goat Mountain and Huckleberry Mountain. The new names were developed in consultation with the Confederated Tribes of the Colville and the Board's Committee on Geographic Names.
