Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fires on Keewatin Street and Manitoba Avenue

Winnipeg, MB- The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to two structure fires last evening

Keewatin Street fire

At 6:40 p.m. on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, the WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a six-storey apartment building in the 0 to 100 block of Keewatin Street.

When crews arrived on scene, they found smoke in the building. They located a fire in elevator mechanical room and launched an offensive fire attack. The fire was declared under control at 7:04 p.m.

Some residents were temporarily evacuated from their suites. Others were able to shelter in place. No injuries were reported.

Preliminary observations suggest the fire was accidental, caused by a failure in an elevator motor. Damage estimates are not available at this time.

Manitoba Avenue fire

At 9:19 p.m. on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, WFPS crews responded to reports of a fire in a two-storey duplex in the 600 block of Manitoba Avenue.

Upon arrival at the scene, crews found smoke and flames coming from the structure. They entered and fought the fire from inside, declaring the fire under control at 10:50 p.m.

All occupants of the building safely self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. No injuries were reported. Crews located and rescued a dog from one of the suites.

The City of Winnipeg's Emergency Social Services teamwas called to help the displaced residents find temporary accommodations.

The fire is under investigation. Damage estimates are not available.
