With traffic volumes surging along Interstate 10 through Buckeye, city leaders are urging state lawmakers to protect previously approved funding for critical safety improvements.
More than 140,000 vehicles travel I-10 between State Route 85 and Citrus Road each day, a nearly 40% increase in just two years. As the corridor nears capacity, congestion is creating serious safety risks.
Between 2021 and 2025, 1,145 crashes were reported between Citrus Road and Verrado Way. Stop-and-go traffic often leads to rear-end collisions and can delay emergency responders when seconds matter most.
The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), in partnership with the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) and regional partners, has already planned improvements including:
Funding was approved by the Arizona Legislature in Fiscal Year 2023, with Buckeye and MAG committing $10 million locally. However, this funding is now at risk amid ongoing state budget negotiations.
This issue extends beyond Buckeye. I-10 is a key artery for commerce across the region and state. As economic growth accelerates in metro Phoenix and the West Valley, the corridor carries not only commuters but also goods and services vital to Arizona's economy. Ensuring I-10 can safely and efficiently handle this demand is essential to regional success.
As one of Arizona's fastest-growing communities, Buckeye stresses that transportation infrastructure must keep pace with demand. City leaders urge state lawmakers to maintain funding and timelines, and ask residents to contact legislators and the Governor's Office to highlight the importance of traffic safety, mobility, and economic growth across the West Valley.
