Value Line Investment Survey is the gold standard for many investors. Printed weekly, the newsletters track data and analyze over 90% of all stocks that trade on U.S. exchanges. Founded in 1931 by Arnold Bernhard, shortly after his mother lost the little savings she had in the stock market crash, Value Line Investment Survey has historically been one of the most used reference resources at SBPL, for decades.

Fast forward to 2019. Due to the rising cost of Value Line, and cuts to the collections budget, SBPL was faced with the tough decision to cancel its subscription. This was a blow to the weekly investment regulars who relied on this reference resource to manage their investments and retirement accounts.

We're excited to bring this resource back to our community. Whether you're just dipping your toes in the stock market, or are a seasoned investor, take full advantage of this valuable resource. Why buy it, when you can use it for free at your public library!

Value Line @ SBPL: A History

Two library regulars, Frank and Joseph Gila, were known to visit the library weekly during the 1960s, 70s, and 80s and were regular users of Value Line. The story goes that the brothers invested their money well, and after their passing (Frank in 1986 and Joseph in 1999), their beloved neighbors managed the Gila estate and ensured that the Gila brothers' good fortune benefited our local community (see full story below).

THE LEGACY OF TWO BROTHERS LIVES ON: Frank & Joseph Gila Fund
Frank and Joe Gila were raised in New Jersey, the sons of Italian immigrants. Children during the Great Depression, they worked hard and both excelled as accountants. Eventually, they moved to Santa Barbara, inspired by its beauty and climate. The Gila brothers were bright and motivated, lifelong learners who made frequent use of the public library to learn more about economics and the stock market. They invested well and accumulated considerable wealth over the years.
When Frank died, Joe was left without his best friend. He developed a deep and lasting friendship with two neighbors, Jan and Sue. Upon Joe's death Jan and Sue became guardians of the Gila Fund at the Santa Barbara Foundation. In life, Frank and Joe appreciated the public library and saw the value in supporting basic needs such as health care, housing, and education. Their fund continues to improve the lives of people in need by giving to organizations such as the Family Service Agency, Santa Barbara Education Foundation, American Red Cross and numerous medical agencies. Today, Frank and Joe's legacy is alive in our community, stewarded by two neighbors who have both an admiration of the Gila brothers and an appreciation of the value of philanthropy in our county.
