Nevada County - Caltrans is reminding motorists the traffic shift along westbound Interstate 80 (I-80) near the junction with State Route 20 (SR 20) is now in effect, as part of the $112 million Yuba Pass Separation Overhead Bridge Project.
About 2 miles west of Eagle Lakes Road, motorists will use the two left lanes and veer left to utilize the crossover and remain on westbound I-80. Motorists will cross back over to the westbound side of the highway just past the exit to Yuba Gap. Motorists exiting westbound I-80 to State Route 20 will use the far-right lane and veer to the right to access the off-ramp.
As a result of the crossover, the following closures are in place until the new westbound bridge replacement work is completed later this year.
-
State Route 20 on-ramp to westbound I-80: Motorists will detour eastbound I-80 to Eagle Lakes Road and head back westbound on I-80.
-
Westbound I-80 off-ramp to Yuba Gap (Crystal Lake Road, Exit 160): Motorists will detour westbound I-80 to Emigrant Gap and head back eastbound on I-80.
Caltrans is also reminding motorists of scheduled closures along eastbound SR 20, between the Omega Scenic Overlook and the junction with I-80, due to demolition of the I-80 westbound bridge span.
The schedule is as follows:
-
7 p.m. Sunday, May 10 through 9 a.m. Friday, May 15
-
7 p.m. Sunday, May 17 through 9 a.m. Friday, May 22
Detour:
-
Motorists looking to connect to I-80 from eastbound SR 20 will detour southbound on State Route 49 (SR 49) to connect with I-80 in Auburn or southbound on State Route 174 to connect with I-80 in Colfax.
-
Large trucks are directed to only use SR 49.
The extended lane closures will help to minimize the duration of the work and improve workers' safety. The schedule is subject to change or be delayed due to weather, availability of materials or other unexpected events.
Motorists are reminded that the speed limit within the construction zone has been reduced to 55 mph and the California Highway Patrol will be present for traffic enforcement.
Flatiron Construction of Concord is the prime contractor. The project is replacing the current bridge and will improve freight efficiency along I-80 by increasing the load carrying capacity for larger trucks. The project will also construct median barriers, upgrade drainage and install roadway weather information systems. The project is expected to be completed by winter 2027.
Caltrans District 3 maintains 4,385 lane miles across 11 Sacramento Valley and Northern Sierra counties. Drivers are reminded to "Be Work Zone Alert" and slow in construction zones for safety.
