PANGKALPINANG -- PT Timah Tbk continues its efforts to preserve the environment through a land reclamation program on post-mining areas. This initiative serves as a concrete step to restore the ecological function of the land while maintaining ecosystem balance.
PT Timah's land reclamation process includes several stages, starting with reclamation planning, site surveys, socialization, land arrangement, planting, maintenance, success assessment, and conservation-based environmental management to maintain ecosystem balance.
In the first semester of 2025, PT Timah Tbk carried out land reclamation covering 75.52 hectares in the Bangka Belitung Islands Province. The reclamation was implemented through revegetation or planting, as well as other forms of reclamation.
The company's reclamation efforts included planting fast-growing species such as acacia, sengon, casuarina, and ketapang; planting productive/economic crops such as oil palm, rubber, and fruit trees; and planting local species such as cashew, pelawan, puspa, and gelam in between the primary fast-growing plants.
Other forms of reclamation carried out by PT Timah are tailored to the proposals and/or agreements of stakeholders, including the development of tourist areas, public cemeteries, and motocross tracks.
As a member of the Mining Industry Holding MIND ID, PT Timah also works on ecosystem rehabilitation, such as restoring natural habitats for protected wildlife at the Air Jangkang Reclamation Village in collaboration with ALOBI.
PT Timah Tbk's Department Head of Corporate Communication, Anggi Siahaan, stated that land reclamation reflects the company's commitment to improving the environment.
"The company not only restores the land but also plants trees that match the characteristics of the area to ensure sustainable growth," said Anggi.
PT Timah also involves the community in reclamation activities through environment-based economic empowerment programs such as agroforestry and ecotourism, which are implemented at the Selinsing Reclamation Village in collaboration with the Selinsing Village-Owned Enterprise (BUMDes).
This approach also creates new job opportunities and raises community awareness of environmental protection. As a result, post-mining land is not only restored to greenery but also utilized for both community and environmental benefits.
"Community involvement is the key to successful reclamation. This way, the results of reclamation can be maintained because the community takes ownership and care of it," Anggi added.
The land reclamation program is part of the company's commitment to practicing sustainable mining. The focus is not only on production but also on environmental restoration.
