Denver Parks and Recreation (DPR), in partnership with the Colorado Rapids, Downtown Denver Partnership, Street Soccer USA (SSUSA), and national supporters Visa, Bank of America, the Adam R. Scripps Foundation, and UNIQLO, yesterday unveiled two new lighted turf street soccer courts and a community classroom/clubhouse at Skyline Park.
The new activation is designed to bring people together, foster youth development, and strengthen community connection through the unifying power of soccer. The addition of the fields is part of a larger, community-based vision to transform all three blocks of Skyline Park to a welcoming destination that brings people together through a mix of experiences.
"This activation is more than just a new amenity; it will help transform the central business district into a neighborhood hub that drives activity, supports small businesses, and benefits every downtown Denver visitor", said Mayor Mike Johnston. "With both short-term renovations and long-term investments-backed by past bond support and the Downtown Development Authority-we're building a downtown that is vibrant, healthy, and alive".
Mayor Mike Johnston joined community leaders, partner executives, and more than 150 children and families for a ribbon-cutting celebration that featured an inaugural youth match, interactive soccer clinics, local food vendors, and family-friendly programming that reflects the vibrant energy of the new space.
"DPR has imagined spaces like this since 2017, as part of our Outdoor Downtown Plan", said DPR Executive Director Jolon Clark. These fields are just a glimpse of the future - public spaces that strengthen downtown as a neighborhood while also serving the recreation needs of those who come downtown to visit."
The Skyline Park installation expands access to safe, inclusive, and dynamic play areas while also offering educational opportunities. In addition to soccer instruction, the classroom/clubhouse will host workshops on financial literacy and community programming designed to build confidence and leadership in Denver's youth.
"Since day one everyone has been united in the goal of delivering this Street Soccer Park for the Denver community", said Lawrence Cann, Founder of SSUSA. "It's public private partnership at its best and we saw the moment we cut the ribbon that it will be a space embraced by kids, families, and adults every day."
Skyline Park is at the heart of Denver's downtown, and this initiative highlights DPR's commitment to creating opportunities that serve both local families and the broader community. By introducing street soccer to one of the city's most iconic downtown parks, partners hope to inspire the next generation of players and fans in the lead-up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
