Mosquito Spraying by Montgomery County Scheduled for Lower Merion Township

The Montgomery County Office of Public Health (OPH) plans to conduct adult mosquito control spraying in Lower Merion Township, due to West Nile Virus positive collections within this area, on the evening of Wednesday, September 2nd with a rain date of Thursday, September 3rd. The application will begin at about 8:00 p.m. and end around 10:00 p.m.

The adult mosquito control program is used in limited situations to address areas where disease-infected adult mosquitoes have been detected. All areas within the highlighted sections of the attached map will be subject to the spray. The treatment area will be within the borders of Remington Road, Haverford Road, Green Hill Lane, Ingeborg Road, and City Avenue.

During these events, any residents within the spray area should consider remaining indoors, closing windows, and turning off ventilation systems that draw in outside air for the duration of the spray plus 30 minutes afterward.

Workers will be using Duet® Duel-Action Adulticide at a rate of 0.75 fluid ounces per acre applied with an ATV mounted Ultra Low Volume (ULV) sprayer. The spray will be performed by OPH staff.

Residents who are hypersensitive to pesticide sprays can find information on eligibility and how to enroll in the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture's Pesticide Hypersensitivity Registry.

Tips to eliminate mosquito-breeding areas:

Look around your yard and remove standing water. Toss items that collect water such as old tires, cans, bottles, buckets, or toys. Even a small amount of water sitting for five days can produce thousands of mosquitoes.

• After it rains, empty water from bird baths, flowerpots, kiddie pools, and pool covers.
• Check roof gutters to make sure they drain properly and are free of debris.
• Keep swimming pools, outdoor saunas, and hot tubs clean and chlorinated. If not in use, keep them covered and drain any water on top.
• Drill holes in the bottom of recycling bins so water can drain. Keep trash and recycling lids covered so rain cannot collect inside.
• Make sure window and door screens are not torn so mosquitoes cannot get inside.
