ICYMI: Cortez Masto Fights for Fair and Transparent Gas Prices

In Case You Missed It, U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) introduced legislation to help combat high gas and energy prices in Nevada and across the country. The Fair and Transparent Gas Prices Act would require the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to investigate anti-competitive, collusive, or other illegal activity that artificially raises the price of oil and gas paid by consumers. This legislation comes in the wake of President Donald Trump's war in Iran, which has already dramatically raised gas prices globally.

  • The "Fair and Transparent Gas Prices Act" would provide the Federal Trade Commission with an additional $15 million a year to hire up to 50 additional investigators and enforcement personnel to up its oversight of price-gouging by oil and gas companies.
  • Cortez Masto said in a statement that the bill addresses the "opportunity for corporate greed" created by the war in Iran.
  • "We must ensure that Trump's friends in the oil and gas industry aren't taking advantage of the chaos to rake in record profits at the expense of hard-working American families," she said.

Anchor: "Senator Catherine Cortez Masto is now introducing some legislation in Washington to potentially investigate these high gas and energy prices. Their proposal would give the Federal Trade Commission money to hire more investigators to look for any kind of illegal price gouging."

Cortez Masto: "That means somebody is making money. Somebody is making money very quickly and profiting off of this. My concern is…are they profiteering in an illegal or collusive way, intentionally driving up these costs, or keeping [costs] up so that they can take advantage of what's happening right now?"
