See 2-way traffic concepts in-person on October 21; construction proposed for 2027-28

Don't miss a first look at proposed 2-way traffic designs for Roxboro and Mangum streets at the fall open house. The highly anticipated City of Durham project will hit a milestone with your help. A public open house is scheduled for 5:30 - 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 21, at 311 Dowd Street; entrance to the open house will be on Corporation Street. All are welcome to see conceptual drawings and to meet our Transportation staff.

What You Need to Know

  • Roxboro and Mangum streets 2-way traffic conversion drawings on display at Oct. 21 open house
  • Other proposed safety features: nearby intersection redesigns and curb adjustments
  • Construction scheduled for 2027-28

Drawings at the upcoming open house will include: Roxboro and Mangum streets 2-way traffic patterns, nearby intersection redesigns, and curb adjustments for essential vehicles like fire trucks and buses. The proposed changes are meant to make the roads safer for people who walk, bike, drive, or ride the bus. Roxboro and Mangum streets are owned and maintained by the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

Key ideas

  • 2-way traffic patterns from Markham Avenue to Lakewood Avenue, keeping roadway footprint as close to what currently exists
  • Redesign of areas such as Markham intersections, Five Points intersection (at Corporation Street), Ramseur Street connections, and the Mangum-Roxboro Connector
  • Curb adjustments at select corners for large vehicles, like City buses and fire trucks to turn safely

Next steps include the final design stage in 2026, in which traffic signals and signs will also be redesigned for 2-way traffic.

Project updates, history, and public event information can be found on the project web page.

Construction is anticipated in 2027-2028.
