The President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, has received the Taoiseach of Ireland, Micheál Martin, who is on a tour to present the priorities of the Irish presidency of the Council of the European Union in the second half of this year. At the meeting they discussed the strengthening of bilateral relations and matters of common interest, as well as analysing the international context.

President Sánchez has conveyed his commitment to strengthening cooperation between the two countries in the field of energy transition to his Irish counterpart. Within this framework of understanding, Spain and Ireland have also agreed to promote a bilateral Spanish-Irish strategy. With a view to the upcoming Irish presidency of the Council of the European Union, the president of the Government of Spain has stated that Spain defends the need to move towards an ambitious and robust Multiannual Financial Framework.

Finally, the two leaders discussed issues of common interest in the international sphere. President Sánchez reiterated his firm support for Ukraine and the defence of its sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as reaffirming Spain's position calling for the de-escalation of the conflict in the Middle East, the defence of European interests against coercion and the safeguarding of international law.
