Tim Melton Named Interim General Counsel While State Treasurer Launches National Search

State Treasurer Brad Briner announced today that Tim Melton will be the Department of State Treasurer's interim general counsel. The move follows current General Counsel Ben Garner's decision to resign at the end of this month to take a job in the private sector.

"Ben has been a valued member of our senior staff. During his six years as general counsel, his steady-handed legal guidance has been exemplary. Ben's professional judgment has been sound and trusted, and his dedication to public service unwavering. He will be missed," Treasurer Briner said.

Melton, who will not place himself into consideration for the permanent role, is currently the assistant general counsel for the department's Retirement Systems Division and has served in that capacity for almost five years. He handles a variety of retirement-related duties ranging from providing guidance pertaining to the proper administration of retirement system laws to overseeing complex litigation matters.

"Tim has been a great asset to the department and an integral part of the legal team. We are confident he will fulfill his new, temporary responsibilities in seamless fashion," Treasurer Briner said.

In the coming weeks, the Department of State Treasurer will launch a national search for a new general counsel.
