Visit to the Jasper Royal Canadian Legion

October 26, 2024

Hello, bonjour, [Inuktitut greeting].

I'm truly honored and delighted to be here with all of you.

I wish to acknowledge that we are located in Treaty 6 and 8 territories, as well as the traditional lands of the Anishinabe, Aseniwuche Winewak, Dene-zaa, Nêhiyawak, Secwépemc, Stoney Nakoda, Mountain Métis and Métis.

These past few months have been extremely challenging for the Jasper community.

You have shown incredible solidarity and resilience.

I thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for everything you did to support each other.

Wildfires ravaged your homes and your town. The wildfires ravaged a cherished historic gem of Canada and Jasper's National Park.

They forced thousands of residents to leave their homes. I can only imagine how devastating this experience has been for you, your families and your loved ones.

I want to commend the outstanding work of firefighters and first responders who took action from the very first moments the fire started.

You were there for your community in a time of crisis and danger.

You looked well beyond personal safety in order to rescue others.

And tragically, one of your colleagues, Morgan Kitchen, lost his life in the process.

I was deeply saddened to learn of his passing, and I want to offer my most sincere condolences to his family. May you find comfort in knowing his courage and heroic actions will be remembered.

I also want to thank municipal and provincial leaders, "Greyshirt" volunteers, veterans, local restaurants and businesses, and everyone in Jasper who came together to assist essential personnel and victims during the wildfires.

The events that happened here at Royal Canadian Legion are truly remarkable.

Whether serving meals to the crews or coordinating the donation of essential items to residents, everyone here inspired admiration and hope throughout our entire country.

Your solidarity fills us with hope.

You give us hope that, even under extreme circumstances, the strength of our communities will always prevail.

And that we can rebuild our lives, stronger than ever.

Thank you. Merci. Nakurmiik.
