Shore Medical Center announced that support from OAR13's Kyle Evans Memorial Golf Outing has now reached $100,000 over the past five years, following a recent $20,000 donation from the organization's 2025 outing. The Kyle Evans Memorial Golf Outing will return to Harbor Pines Golf Club on Friday, April 24.
OAR13 is a nonprofit organization focused on attacking the opioid epidemic at its source and supporting new treatment methods in the community. Funds raised from its annual golf tournament support Shore's ongoing efforts to reduce opioid use, expand non-opioid pain management strategies, and connect patients struggling with addiction to treatment resources.
These initiatives have produced measurable results and demonstrate continued progress in reducing opioid use within the hospital. From 2024 to 2025, those reductions accelerated significantly, with a 15.5% decrease in the number of opioid doses administered to hospitalized patients and a 10% decrease in the number of intravenous opioid doses administered to hospitalized patients.
"Thanks to everyone who organized and supported the Kyle Evans Memorial Golf Outing, this partnership with OAR13 has now generated $100,000 to assist our efforts to address the opioid epidemic in our community," said David Hughes, chief executive officer and president of Shore Medical Center. "The continued reductions highlight the impact of sustained clinical initiatives designed to strengthen opioid stewardship, while ensuring patients continue to receive safe and effective pain management."
David Beyel, Jr. presented the $20,000 check to members of Shore's leadership team on Thursday, February 26. Beyel, Jr., along with Nick Canderan, Maggie Davis, Jason Dugan, Nikki Patrizzi and Ryan Scully, are members of OAR13.
"On behalf of OAR13, we would like to thank all of our sponsors, players, families and friends that continue to support us each year," said Ryan Scully. "What started out as an idea and an excuse to come together to remember our friend Kyle has now turned into $100k in donations to the hospital and 7 college scholarships for student-athletes. We hope to continue to make a meaningful impact in the community."
Opioid pain medications are associated with numerous adverse events, including sedation that can lead to respiratory depression and intubation. IV administration of opioids carries an increased risk of these serious adverse events compared to oral administration. The Pharmacy-Driven IV to Oral Opioid Conversion Protocol prioritizes oral opioids and individualized, multimodal pain management to reduce these risks and support a safe transition of care to the outpatient setting.
In addition, Shore's Emergency Department has expanded non-opioid pain management treatment options within provider order sets to help decrease unnecessary opioid use when clinically appropriate.
Members of Shore's Pharmacy, Nursing, Providers, and Case Management teams are also working with Legacy Treatment Centers to provide opioid detox treatment to hospitalized patients and assist with transitioning them to outpatient care, helping reduce the risk of relapse and patients lost to follow-up.
Additional initiatives implemented at Shore Medical Center include AI software that monitors the use of controlled substances to prevent diversion; the purchase and installation of new cabinetry, storage systems and surveillance equipment to strengthen medication security; providing naloxone discharge kits to patients who present after an opioid overdose or show signs of opioid and/or IV drug abuse; and offering a pharmacy pain consult service through which providers can request a comprehensive chart review and patient-specific pain management recommendations.
