You know we didn't get much snow this winter, but do you know how much less? Half as much as winter 2024/2025, to be exact.
This year our reservoirs are 68% full. Last year at this same time, they were 80% full. Depending on the coming months, it could be less than that.
If it feels like water conservation is a constant message, it is because Utah is a desert and always will be. Your small conservation may be only a few drops into the Great Salt Lake, but it makes a big impact on the water supply for everyone.
Do your water-saving efforts make a difference? YES! In 2000, when West Jordan residents used around 227 gallons of water per person every day, the City set a goal to reduce water use by 25% by 2025. We beat that goal - by 2023, the average use was 170 gallons per day!
Summer is approaching and we're not sure what is going to fall from the skies. Here is what we DO know.
Please wait to water your lawn until May 15. The ground is still wet underneath from the winter snow (little as it was) and spring rain. Grass is resilient! Your grass will learn to grow with less water. Grass we can live without! Drinking water we can't!
If you need to water your landscaping, trees are the most important. Grass can be regrown in weeks. Trees take decades. Water your trees first.
Water your shrubs and bushes, perennials, vegetables and fruit next.
When you set your sprinklers, avoid spraying fences and sidewalks. Concrete doesn't grow!
Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District and Conservation Garden Park will post water recommendations through the summer.
Attend conservation classes at Conservation Garden Park to learn how to improve your own yard. After the beginner classes, you can sign up for more advanced and in-depth courses!
