~ Resolution recognizes the role community school coordinators play in helping students succeed-statewide, there are dozens of community schools serving thousands of students ~
WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Mazie K. Hirono (D-HI) joined Senators Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) and three other Senate colleagues in introducing a bicameral resolution designating September 14-20, 2025 as "Community School Coordinators Appreciation Week" to recognize the important role that Full-Service Community Schools and Community School Coordinators play in promoting the well-being and education of students, families, and communities.
"Community schools are important because they help to create safe and healthy learning environments for students, while building relationships with their families, and engaging with the community," said Senator Hirono. "I've personally visited community schools in Hawaii and have seen firsthand the essential role community school coordinators play in ensuring the success of these schools. As we recognize Community School Coordinators Appreciation Week, I'm proud to join my colleagues in thanking these coordinators for their hard work and dedication to our students and families."
Community schools are public schools that provide integrated student support systems, such as counseling, medical and dental services, and transportation. They also offer well-designed and expanded learning opportunities and active family and community engagement. Community school coordinators work with the community and non-profits to identify and source additional resources to benefit students and their families. This resolution recognizes the role community school coordinators play in helping students succeed in their academic years and beyond. There are dozens of community schools serving thousands of students throughout Hawaii.
In addition to Senators Hirono and Van Hollen, the resolution was cosponsored by Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL), Bernie Sanders (I-VT), and Martin Heinrich (D-NM). Representative Judy Chu (D-CA) will introduce companion legislation in the House of Representatives.

Senator Hirono is committed to improving opportunities for students and helping to ensure that our youth receive the quality education they deserve. Earlier this year, Senator Hirono took to the Senate floor to express her gratitude to educators in Hawaii and across the country in honor of Teacher Appreciation Week and condemn Donald Trump's attacks on the U.S. Department of Education (ED) and public schools nationwide. Senator Hirono has also been working continuously to call attention to and fight back against Trump and Republicans' attacks on public education. Earlier this summer, in June and July, the senator held spotlight forums focused on the Trump Administration and Congressional Republicans' continued attacks on K-12 public education programs and public school students across the country. Separately, Senator Hirono also joined her colleagues in sending a letter to Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Director Russ Vought and Education Secretary McMahon demanding the immediate release of nearly $7 billion in funding for K-12 schools and adult literacy programs across America-including $30 million in Hawaii-that the Trump Administration attempted to block over the summer.
