Domestic Battery Conviction: Incident occurring on October 12, 2025
The Sparks City Attorney's Office announced that its prosecutor secured a conviction for Juan Mena of one count of Domestic Battery stemming from an incident that occurred on October 12, 2025.
On October 12, 2025, officers responded to a domestic disturbance at a residence in Sparks, Nevada. Officers were dispatched to residence after a female called dispatch and was heard crying and indicated that she had been in a physical fight with her boyfriend who had been stalking her. Further, she indicated that she was currently bleeding from her nose and mouth.
Upon arrival, officers made contact with the Mr. Mena and the female victim. Officer observed the female victim to be wearing a pair of underwear and a sweatshirt, have disheveled hair, red marks on her legs and face and what appeared to be blood coming from her nose. While talking to the female victim and throughout their investigation, officers observed her shaking, upset, and in fear of Mr. Mena. She explained that her boyfriend had been stalking her, found her at her apartment a couple of weeks ago and would not leave her alone.
On the date of the incident, the victim indicated that she was asleep in her bed when she was woken up by Mr. Mena. An argument ensued, causing Mr. Mena to restrain the female victim and squeeze her while she told him to get away. At one point, the female victim indicated that she started screaming to get someone's attention to help her. The female continued to scream after Mr. Mena told her to be quiet to avoid police being alerted. The female indicated that this caused the Defendant to choke her. Further, the female victim indicated that Mr. Mena put his hand on her face as if trying to cover her mouth but hit her in the nose causing it to bleed. She indicated that once Mr. Mena observed her bleeding, he moved away from her, which allowed her to leave the house and call the police.
Mr. Mena declined to answer questions about the incident. However, officers observed what appeared to be blood on his left forearm, which appeared consistent with the female victim's account of the incident.
On November 11, 2025, Senior Assistant City Attorney Ana Swanson represented the City of Sparks and secured a conviction for Domestic Battery against the Defendant.
Sparks City Attorney Wes Duncan stated, "Cases of Domestic Battery like this one must be addressed swiftly to protect the victim and ensure the Defendant receives consequences for criminal behavior."
As result of the conviction, the Defendant was sentenced as follows:
The Defendant was sentenced to 180 Washoe County Jail suspended for two years on the condition he serve 2 days in the Washoe County Jail, complete 48 hours of community service, pay a $200 fine plus administrative assessments, pay a $35 Domestic Violence fee, complete 26 weeks of domestic violence counseling, have no contact with the victim, and obey all laws.
Domestic Battery Conviction: Incident occurring on November 20, 2025
The Sparks City Attorney's Office announced that its prosecutor secured a conviction for Jammal Massey of Domestic Battery stemming from an incident that occurred on November 20,2025.
On November 20, 2025, officers responded to a domestic disturbance at a residence in Sparks, Nevada. Sparks Police Department noted that it had been dispatched to the same residence a total of 13 times since July 1, 2024, for domestic disturbances.
Upon arrival, officers contacted the female victim, who had recently given birth and was also recovering from a car accident. She told officers that on this date, her boyfriend and father of her child, Mr. Massey, had entered int the bathroom while she was showering and begun yelling at her. The female victim indicated that she told Mr. Massey to leave the bathroom but the argument escalated and Mr. Massey proceeded to turn the water faucet to hot in an apparent attempt to burn her. The female victim indicated that Mr. Massey then began throwing items around, including her phone, and punched a hole in the bathroom door which had recently been replaced due to use of force by Mr. Massey. Further, Mr. Massey began to clench his fists started making aggressive movements towards her in attempt to intimidate her. The female victim attempted to push Mr. Massey out of the bathroom which resulted in Mr. Massey pushing her back.
Officers observed a red scratch on the female victim's neck. Further, officers observed a hole in the bathroom door and items thrown around in an otherwise clean residence. The female victim indicated that her two children, ages 4 and 1, were present during the incident.
Officers were unable to contact Mr. Massey on the date of the incident. However, the following day on November 21, 2025, dispatch received another call for a domestic disturbance at the home that was called in as a welfare check by Child Protective Services (CPS). Specifically, CPS called in the welfare check after a worker reported that she had been on the phone with the female victim and heard a verbal argument between the female victim and Mr. Massey. During the argument, the worker reported that Mr. Massey was irate, using multiple slurs and derogatory remarks towards the victim, and the victim was heard pleading with Mr. Massey to allow her to keep the baby due to breastfeeding. Eventually the female victim was able to leave the residence with both children and met with a domestic violence advocate who placed the female victim and her children into safe housing.
Upon arrival at the residence on November 21, 2025, officers detained and arrested Mr. Massey. Officers further noted that the female victim's neck injury appeared scabbed, red, and had deepened in color since the initial incident.
On December 3, 2025, Senior Assistant City Attorney Ana Swanson represented the City of Sparks and secured a conviction for Domestic Battery against the Defendant.
Sparks City Attorney Wes Duncan stated, "Vulnerable victims like the woman in this case cannot be left unprotected by their community, and our Office will continue to stand up for such victims and demand accountability for domestic batterers."
As result of the conviction, the Defendant was sentenced as follows:
The Defendant was sentenced to 180 Washoe County Jail suspended for two years on the condition he serve 2 days in the Washoe County Jail, complete 48 hours of community service, pay a $200 fine plus administrative assessments, pay a $35 Domestic Violence fee, complete 26 weeks of domestic violence counseling, complete an effects of violence in the home parenting class, have no contact with the victim, be tested for drugs and alcohol through the court's compliance program, have no drugs and/alcohol, and obey all laws.
