Ranking Member Scott Statement on July Jobs Report

WASHINGTON - Ranking Member Robert C. "Bobby" Scott (VA-03), House Committee on Education and Workforce, released the following statement after the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced that the economy lost 23,000 jobs in July, and the unemployment rate ticked down to 4.1 percent. At this point in his term, the economy under President Biden had created 10.2 million jobs, compared to just 590,000 under President Trump's second term. In the 18 months of the present Administration, not a single month has achieved the Biden 4-year average of 321,000 new jobs per month.

"As President Trump continues to wage his reckless war, working families are paying the price-especially at the pump. Moreover, his chaotic tariffs and failed economic policies continue to drive up the cost of everyday necessities while creating uncertainty for workers and businesses alike. Americans are being forced to stretch every paycheck further just to keep up with rising costs.

"Families are seeing their purchasing power shrink as the costs of groceries, housing, health care, and other essentials continue to rise. These failed policies are deepening a K-shaped economy, where the wealthy continue to prosper while working families struggle to make ends meet.

"Democrats remain committed to lowering costs, raising wages, and creating good-paying jobs. Democrats also saved the pensions of more than a million retirees through the American Rescue Plan's Special Financial Assistance Program, protecting tens of thousands of businesses and jobs in the process, and remain committed to defending it. Americans deserve an economy that rewards hard work and expands opportunity-not just the wealthy and well-connected."
