(HARTFORD, CT) - The Connecticut Insurance Department (CID) is recognizing Financial Literacy Month by encouraging residents to take simple steps to better understand their insurance coverage and strengthen their financial preparedness.

Insurance is one of the most important tools consumers rely on to protect their homes, health, vehicles, and finances. Yet many people are unaware of coverage limitations or gaps until after a loss occurs. Taking time now to understand your policy can help prevent unexpected financial hardship later.

"Preparing ahead of time is one of the most effective ways to reduce financial risk," said Connecticut Insurance Commissioner Josh Hershman. "Knowing what your policy covers and where gaps may exist helps you plan ahead, and the Department is here to help Connecticut residents find clear, reliable information."

Financial Preparedness Tips:

  • Review your insurance policies regularly to ensure you have the right coverage, especially after major life events.
  • Understand what is covered under your policy and where gaps may exist.
  • Consider whether additional protection, such as flood insurance, may be needed.
  • Keep important financial and insurance records organized and accessible.
  • Know how to contact your insurer and file a claim before an emergency occurs.

CID Resources to Help You Get Started:

  • Consumer Information Center : A one-stop online resource with guides, tools, and information to help you better understand your coverage.
  • Consumer Affairs Division: Assistance with questions, complaints, and help resolving issues with insurance companies.
  • Community Outreach: Educational presentations and resources available through CID's Speaker's Bureau.

Residents are encouraged to explore these resources and take proactive steps toward understanding their coverage. Being informed today can help reduce financial stress when it matters most.
