National Nurses United (NNU), the largest union of registered nurses in the United States with more than 225,000 members, today announced its endorsement of Wala Blegay for Maryland's 5th Congressional District. As an at-Large member of the Prince George's County Council and a labor attorney, Wala has spent decades championing immigrant and workers' rights, as well as guaranteed health care for everyone.

"Wala Blegay has consistently stood with nurses and our patients," said Mary Turner, RN and NNU president. "Throughout her decades of service, Wala has shown she is a proven fighter for progressive values. Nurses know they have an ally in Wala, and we look forward to working with her to strengthen labor rights, win guaranteed health care through Medicare for All, and build a government and an economy that benefits working people."

"I am deeply honored to receive the endorsement of National Nurses United," said Wala Blegay. "For nearly a decade, I have stood alongside nurses-fighting for safe nurse-to-patient ratios, better working conditions, and the protections they need to care for our communities. Nurses are on the frontlines of our health care system, and their voices must be heard. As a Congresswoman, I will continue to make nurses a priority and fight to ensure they have the support, safety, and respect they deserve."

NNU supports candidates who are committed to nurses' values, including safe staffing in all hospitals across the country, protecting the rights of workers to organize, and guaranteeing health care to everyone. In a recent Gallup poll, nurses were voted the most trusted profession in the United States for the 24th consecutive year. NNU looks forward to helping elect Wala and working closely with her in Congress on the important issues that affect registered nurses, our patients, and our communities.

National Nurses United is the largest and fastest-growing union and professional association of registered nurses in the United States with more than 225,000 members nationwide. NNU affiliates include California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee, DC Nurses Association, Michigan Nurses Association, Minnesota Nurses Association, and New York State Nurses Association.
