Following the success of Timeless, the posthumous Prince album featuring 10 previously unreleased songs recorded across five decades, from 1977 to 2016, and a debut on the Billboard 200, new releases of "Calabama" and "Prince and The Band" continue the conversation around his Vault. After NPG Records and the Prince Management Team explained on Instagram that the album version featured live horns recorded after Prince's passing by horn players handpicked by Prince, some critics expressed interest in hearing the original raw recording without the added horns from former members of his band. Prince's Estate decided to add two untouched bonus tracks of "Prince and The Band" (which shows Prince's inclusion of live horn sections) to the EP, both of which were not included on the Timeless album. "Calabama" was the only track on Timelesswith additional music added. In response, the Prince Estate is giving listeners the opportunity to hear the similarities and differences firsthand and gain more insight into the process and the responsibility of releasing music from this one of a kind Prince Vault. Certain selected untouched Vault recordings will also be made available for listening purposes at Paisley Park as archival artifacts in 2027, offering visitors further insight into Prince's creative process.
Produced, arranged, composed and performed by Prince, "Calabama" was recorded by Joe Lipinski at Paisley Park on January 21, 2003, and features John Blackwell on drums. The Timeless version includes horn parts recorded after Prince's passing by Greg Boyer, Adrian Crutchfield and Lynn Grissett, while "Calabama (Vault Raw)" presents the recording without those added horns.
"Prince And The Band (Vault Raw 1)" features Prince on all vocals and instruments and was recorded and mixed by Ian Boxill at Paisley Park. "Prince And The Band (Vault Raw 2)," recorded and mixed by Boxill at Paisley Park on August 22, 2006, features Prince on vocals, guitar and keys, joined by Cora Coleman-Dunham on drums, Josh Dunham on bass, Maceo Parker on saxophone, Ray Monteiro on trumpet and Greg Boyer on trombone.
