City of Santa Fe to Launch Automated Speed and Noise Enforcement Program

The City of Santa Fe and the Santa Fe Police Department will begin deploying automated speed and noise enforcement systems throughout the community in August as part of a new initiative to improve traffic safety, reduce excessive vehicle noise and address dangerous driving behaviors.

The City Council unanimously approved a multi-year agreement with JENOPTIK Smart Mobility Solutions, LLC, to provide six mobile enforcement trailers equipped with automated speed cameras and noise monitoring technology. The trailers will operate around the clock and will be strategically placed in locations identified through public complaints, traffic studies and crash data.

The program is designed to address ongoing concerns about excessive speeding, street racing and illegally modified vehicles that generate disruptive noise in neighborhoods throughout Santa Fe.

"Our residents deserve to feel safe in their neighborhoods and to enjoy the peace and character that make Santa Fe such a special place to live," Mayor Michael Garcia said. "This program is about protecting our community through smart, responsible technology that encourages safer driving, reduces dangerous behavior and improves quality of life. Just as important, the City will retain ownership of all data collected through this program, and that information will not be shared with outside entities, including federal immigration authorities."

Before citations are issued, every potential violation captured by the automated system will be reviewed by law enforcement personnel. The Santa Fe Police Department will also conduct a public education campaign before enforcement begins. The campaign will include advance notification of camera locations, public outreach, clearly posted signage and a 30-day warning period before citations are issued.

"Our community has consistently told us that dangerous speeding, street racing and excessive vehicle noise are among their greatest public safety concerns," Interim Police Chief Ben Valdez said. "These enforcement systems provide another tool to help us address those concerns while allowing our officers to remain focused on emergency response, proactive policing and community engagement. Our objective is simple: safer streets, quieter neighborhoods and greater accountability for those who choose to drive recklessly."

In addition to improving roadway safety, the automated enforcement program is expected to serve as a force multiplier for the Police Department by allowing officers to dedicate more time to responding to calls for service and strengthening relationships with residents.

Revenue generated through citations will fund the operation of the program. Any additional revenue will be dedicated to the department's safe driving initiatives and other traffic safety efforts.

The Police Department will monitor data collected during the initial deployment to evaluate changes in driver behavior, measure the program's effectiveness and determine whether additional enforcement systems should be deployed in the future.
