Free weeklong program introduces students to careers in public and environmental health

Ever wondered what it takes to keep an entire city healthy? The Denver Department of Public Health & Environment (DDPHE) is inviting high school and college students to find out at its second annual Public Health Summer Camp, a free five-day program designed to introduce students to careers in public and environmental health.

Taking place Aug. 3-7, 2026, the immersive weeklong program gives students a behind-the-scenes look at how public health professionals help Denverites lead healthy lives. Through hands-on activities, interactive learning experiences, facility tours and conversations with public health experts, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the many career paths available in public health.

Public Health Summer Camp is designed to inspire the next generation of public health professionals. Public health plays a critical role in protecting and improving the health of Denver's communities, but many students may not be aware of the wide variety of careers available in the field. Participants will explore these career paths firsthand, connect with experienced public health professionals and gain a better understanding of how local public health agencies work to keep communities healthy, safe and thriving.

Throughout the week, students will explore a variety of public health programs and meet professionals working across DDPHE. Topics may include:

  • Air Quality and Environmental Health - how Denver monitors and improves environmental conditions
  • Health Equity - ensuring all communities have access to opportunities for good health
  • Public Health Investigations - how experts keep the places we live, work and play safe and healthy
  • Community and Behavioral Health - reducing chronic disease through awareness and prevention programs
  • Animal Protection - protecting pets and people
  • Office of the Medical Examiner - understanding the science behind medicolegal investigations

These experiences help students see how diverse public health teams work together to promote wellness, prevent disease, protect the environment and improve health outcomes for everyone who lives, works and visits Denver.

Students who attend all five days of the program will receive:

  • Hands-on learning experiences and interactive programming
  • Lunch provided each day
  • Opportunities to network with public health professionals and subject matter experts
  • A certificate of completion

The Public Health Summer Camp is free to attend, but registration is required, and space is limited.
