Willamette University names Jennifer Jacobs Henderson as new provost

Willamette University has announced the appointment of Dr. Jennifer Jacobs Henderson as its next provost and senior vice president. Henderson, who currently serves as vice provost and professor of communication at Trinity University in San Antonio, will begin her tenure on July 1, 2025, following the retirement of its first and current provost Carol Long.

As Willamette's chief academic officer, Henderson will steward the university's mission and work closely with faculty, deans, and staff to maintain the institution's high standards of academic excellence while ensuring its continued relevance in higher education.

Henderson brings extensive experience in academic leadership and strategic planning to her new role. At Trinity University, she has been instrumental in overseeing strategic growth and student success initiatives. She has explored global partnerships that connect undergraduate programs with graduate and professional studies, and is managing complex institutional projects, including the upgrade of Trinity's student information system.

Known for her holistic approach to student development, Henderson has implemented several successful programs at Trinity, including an all-intake advising model and expanded academic support services. She has also strengthened the university's commitment to student wellness and inclusion.

Her current responsibilities at Trinity include oversight of university-wide strategic initiatives and management of key academic units, including the Registrar's Office and the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. She also supervises student support programs, including Pre-Law, Health Care Professions Advising, and the First Year Experience.

Henderson joined Trinity University in 2002 and is a first amendment historian, teaching courses in media law and ethics. During her tenure, she has served as chair of the Department of Communication for 11 years, Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs: Student Success and as board chair of KRTU, Trinity's independent nonprofit radio station.

She holds a bachelor's degree from Drake University in advertising, public relations, and English, as well as a master's degree and doctorate in communication from the University of Washington.

The search committee highlighted Henderson's proven track record of turning innovative ideas into actionable results. Her appointment is expected to strengthen Willamette's commitment to student success, career preparation, and creating an inclusive environment where students can thrive.

Henderson will assume her new role as Willamette continues to enhance its academic programs and expand its impact in higher education.
