Stopping TB starts with us

You might be surprised to learn that tuberculosis (TB) is still a serious health concern in our communities. Not only is TB present, rates of TB in the Yukon-Kuskokwim region are some of the highest in the world.

The good news is that with awareness, testing, and treatment, we can protect ourselves and our communities. Here's what you need to know-and do-to help stop the spread of tuberculosis.

Think TB

Do you or someone you know have symptoms of TB, such as coughing up blood, fever, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, or are extremely tired and/or have a cough that won't go away? Have you spent time with someone who has TB? Is testing being offered in your school or community? It's important to consider TB, even if you feel healthy.

TB spreads through the air when a person with TB coughs, sneezes, or talks. It's not always easy to know if you have it. Some people will have symptoms. However, many people with TB don't feel sick and TB can live in the body for years without obvious signs. That's why it's important to stay aware and get tested.

Test now

You should get tested for TB if it is offered at your school or in your village, if you've been around someone with TB, if you have symptoms, or whenever it is recommended by your provider. Even if you feel fine, it's important to get tested for TB-especially if it's been over a year since your last test

If you've had TB in the past, you can get it again so it's important to watch for symptoms and talk to your provider about testing. All ages, from infants to elders, can be checked. It's easy to get tested: visit your village clinic, make an appointment in Bethel, or look for local events. Encourage your family and friends to do the same.

Treat fully

If you test positive for TB, don't wait-start treatment right away. TB can be cured with medication, but it's important to take every dose. TB germs are tough and take time to treat. Finishing your full treatment, even if you start feeling better, is critical to protect both you and your community.

Let's work together to get rid of TB in our region. Every person who gets tested, treated, and shares information helps move us closer to a TB-free YK Delta. Talk to your healthcare provider or call 907-543-6949 if you have questions. Together, we can take action to keep our communities healthy and strong.
