Important and exciting improvements are on the way for North Port's I-75 interchanges.
Thanks to years of advocacy by the City's Department of Public Works, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) will begin construction on long-awaited upgrades at the Toledo Blade Boulevard (Exit 179) and Sumter Boulevard (Exit 182) interchanges earlier than initially planned. FDOT is managing the design and construction since it owns those portions of the roadway.
Construction is expected to begin in January 2026 and be completed in early 2027.
Planned improvements include:
- New traffic signals and controlled pedestrian crosswalks
- Upgraded intersection lighting
- Widening of northbound lanes for better traffic flow
- New northbound I-75 free-flow on-ramps from both Sumter and Toledo Blade boulevards
- Dual left-turn lanes from northbound Sumter onto northbound I-75
During construction, motorists should expect periodic lane and ramp closures, especially overnight between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.
A Pre-Construction Information Session will be hosted by FDOT on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2026, from 4-6 p.m. at Suncoast Technical College, 4445 Career Lane.
