Portland State named best value public university in Oregon by Time magazine

Portland State University has been recognized as the best value public university in Oregon and ranked No. 189 nationally in TIME magazine's inaugural list of "America's Best Colleges 2027."

The recognition reinforces Portland State's standing as the premier choice for Oregonians seeking a high-return higher education. By pairing affordability and open access with high-impact academic programs, PSU offers students across the state a direct pathway into thriving regional careers. This recognition from TIME builds on PSU's recent inclusion on the Phi Theta Kappa Transfer Honor Roll list for its exceptional work to create pathways that help community college transfer students earn bachelor's degrees, as well as the university's ongoing ranking as No. 1 for Social Mobility in the Pacific Northwest.

As the demand for skilled technical professionals continues to grow, PSU's targeted investments in high-demand fields are paying off. While maintaining excellence in the arts and humanities, the university has expanded pipelines into science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers, ensuring students gain the practical experience needed to step seamlessly into Oregon's workforce.

TIME structured its national ranking around three core pillars designed to identify institutions that deliver strong student outcomes, foster engaging learning environments and maintain strong appeal to incoming undergraduates. Student outcomes carried the heaviest weight in the scoring model at 75%, followed by the learning environment at 15% and institutional attractiveness at 10%.

The evaluation drew from federal data releases through the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System and the College Scorecard available as of April 2026, using key indicators such as graduation rates, social mobility and post-graduation earnings for Title IV Pell Grant recipients to measure long-term student success.

Central to that return on investment is the comprehensive support students receive as they prepare to transition from the classroom into their careers.
