County Officials Urge Residents Not to Remove Political Signs

With the November 5, 2024, general election less than two weeks away, Loudoun County officials urge residents not to tamper with, destroy or remove campaign and other political signs from private and public property and instead report any sign that they believe is improperly located to the appropriate authorities.

Loudoun County has received reports of signs that may be unsafe for people to touch. Additionally, the unauthorized removal of campaign signs is considered a crime of theft.

Political signs that are located on private property are legally protected speech. Only the property owner should remove a sign that is located in their yard. In neighborhoods with a homeowners association (HOA), residents may report signs to their HOA if they believe the display is a violation of their neighborhood's rules.

Political signs that are located on public property, including in the Virginia Department of Transportation right of way, are subject to local and state laws. Anyone who believes that a campaign sign is in violation of the rules may report it online or by phone to Loudoun County:

Questions and complaints regarding signs in an incorporated town should be directed to the individual town offices in Hamilton, Hillsboro, Leesburg, Lovettsville, Middleburg, Purcellville or Round Hill.

Anyone who believes there is an imminent safety risk posed by a campaign sign should call 911.

The Office of Elections and Voter Registration provides more information about political signs on the Loudoun County website at loudoun.gov/campaignsigns.
