VICENZA, Italy - U.S. Army Garrison Italy recently hosted a Mayors' Summit, bringing together more than 20 local Italian leaders for an afternoon of dialogue, partnership and holiday spirit.
The Dec. 3 event underscored U.S.-Italian ties, with leaders agreeing it strengthened bonds between Soldiers and local communities. Held at the Arena on Caserma Ederle, Italian mayors and council members mingled with American commanders before a formal briefing.
Brig. Gen. Daniel Cederman, deputy commanding general of U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa, opened by thanking the Italian community for its longtime support and stressing the importance of partnerships with Vicenza-area towns. Col. Alessandro Nigri, the new Italian Base Commander, introduced himself and expressed enthusiasm for working with American counterparts.
Col. Vaughn Strong, garrison commander, addressed the recent U.S. government shutdown, noting how the Italian workforce continued supporting the community despite challenges. He also highlighted projects including new housing and a piazza renovation. On a lighter note, Strong praised Vicenza soccer club's success, saying he hopes to be a lifelong fan.
"This summit reflects the enduring partnership between the U.S. Army Garrison and the communities of greater Vicenza - where our Soldiers and Families have found a second home in Italy," Strong said. "Together, we share responsibility for the safety and well-being of our citizens and neighbors - both Italian and American."
After the briefing, leaders took questions. Feedback was positive, with mayors offering invitations to holiday markets, concerts and community events. The session ended with a group photo, holiday toast and informal networking.
Under the Community Alliance Plan, U.S. leaders strengthened rapport with Italian counterparts, exchanging contacts and planning cooperative activities. The 207th Military Intelligence Brigade, partnered with Longare and Arcugnano, discussed upcoming events including a Dec. 28 memorial for B-24 crew members who died in World War II. Isola Vicentina invited the new 509th Signal Battalion command team to local events and suggested a friendly sports match. Strong also planned visits with leaders in Torri di Quartesolo, Montegaldella and Nove.
The summit closed with leaders agreeing the event reinforced U.S.-Italian partnerships and community bonds.
