ALTOONA, Pa. - Penn State Altoona will exhibit "Uncovering," a body of work by Ivyside Juried Exhibition winner Erin Raedeke, Sept. 25 through Oct. 16 in the Sheetz Gallery of the Misciagna Family Center for Performing Arts. The exhibition is free and open to the public.
"Uncovering" examines the connection between a group of self-portraits and a series of cloth paintings, revealing shifting themes that collide and coalesce. Both prioritize observation, highlighting similarities despite one appearing abstract and the other representational. The aim is to discover truths and unveil hidden realities, focusing on both the physical attributes of the subject and the feelings and experiences they evoke. Raedeke states, "While the self-portraits are a reflection of both outward appearance and internal conflicts, the cloth paintings also reveal an inner struggle as well as resilience. Honest investigation leads to awareness and discovery."
Raedeke received her M.F.A. from American University in 2009, and her B.F.A. in painting and B.A. in art history from Indiana University Bloomington in 2000. She also studied at the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2003. Raedeke has exhibited her work nationally and internationally in both solo and group exhibitions, including at the National Portrait Gallery in London. She has been awarded a Carnegie Mellon Research Grant, and she has received the Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Award twice.
The galleries are open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For further information, call the Misciagna Family Center for Performing Arts at 814-949-5452.
