Dolly Parton 's team shared a clip of the late legend taking the stage with her iconic anthem in honor of Dolly Parton day on Friday (September 25). Fans, local business owners, other artists, elected officials and others plan to honor the East Tennessee-born icon on 9/25, a lighthearted nod to one of the biggest hits of her career. Parton wrote "9 to 5" when she starred in the 1980 movie of the same title. She made her film debut alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin.

September 25 has received widespread recognition around the world with many planning to celebrate the beloved country star. It is officially Dolly Parton Day in California, established via legislation signed by the state governor earlier this month. Tennessee lawmakers plan to consider "9 to 5 Day" legislation in January 2027 (Gov. Bill Lee declared Parton's 80th birthday, January 19, 2026, "Dolly Parton Day" earlier this year). On a local level, Nashville, Sevierville, Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg and many other cities have planned events and tributes to honor Parton on 9/25. Many have organized literary initiatives or fundraisers for Parton's Imagination Library, the singer's beloved book-gifting program for children. Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwoodannounced plans to host "Dolly Day" at their bar in downtown Nashville, Friends In Low Places. They shared in a press release days after Parton's passing, "Friends in Low Places will donate its entire income for the day to children's literacy." The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, which still has the Dolly Parton: Journey of a Seeker exhibit on display, will host a free screening of 9 to 5 on Friday evening on Parton's honor, among other Parton-inspired plans. Those are just a few ways people are recognizing Parton on "9 to 5 Day," with many other tributes taking place in communities around the world.

Parton "died peacefully" on August 25 in Nashville, Tennessee, according to an official announcement. She was 80. Many in the country music community and beyond were quick to share heartfelt tributes to the beloved legend. Parton's representatives said in a statement to PEOPLE hours later, "after bravely facing a brief battle with cancer, Dolly departed her Earthly life today at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center surrounded by loved ones." Parton was laid to rest in a private service for immediate family beside husband Carl Dean. Parton and Dean were married nearly 60 years. He died in March 2025. He was 82.
