As the Tampa Bay area enters the drier fall season, the Tampa Water Department is helping residents maintain healthy, water-wise lawns with a free compost giveaway.
Starting Friday, November 7, 2025, at 9 a.m., City of Tampa Water Department customers can collect up to 30 gallons of high-quality, ultra-fine compost at Alfred "Al" Barnes Park (3100 E. 18th Avenue, Tampa). Supplies are limited, and residents must register at tampa.gov/FallCompostGiveaway. The event will continue through Saturday, November 8, or until compost supplies run out.
Homeowners are encouraged to use this compost to topdress their lawns - a process that involves aerating the soil and spreading a thin, ¼ inch to ½ inch layer of compost evenly over the grass. This technique enhances soil health, increases moisture retention, and promotes healthy growth while saving water. According to the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, soils with high organic matter can absorb water and deliver it to plants during dry periods.
This giveaway comes after a drier-than-average summer. Currently, Tampa Bay Water is reporting regional annual average rainfall deficit of 11.3 inches. With once-a-week watering restrictions in place in the City of Tampa, residents are encouraged to make the most of each watering day by improving their soil's ability to hold moisture.
"Tampa residents are always looking for ways to keep their lawns healthy while being water-wise," said Sarah Burns, Water Planning Manager for the Tampa Water Department. "Using compost is a simple, natural way to strengthen soil and reduce water use year-round."
