AAUP, AFT Call on TIAA to Divest from Fossil Fuels

On Earth Day, the presidents of the AAUP and the AFT wrote to TIAA to request a meeting regarding TIAA's continued investments in fossil fuel companies. Todd Wolfson and Randi Weingarten wrote that their memberships include many TIAA participants, who "are not only investors-they are educators, researchers, and community leaders deeply engaged in understanding and addressing the climate crisis."

The AAUP and the AFT formally called on TIAA to take immediate action on fossil fuel divestment, urging them to:

  1. enact an immediate moratorium on all new direct investments in fossil fuels, including extraction, processing, pipelines, and power generation;
  2. develop and implement a prudent but urgent plan to fully divest from all current coal, oil, and gas holdings; and
  3. reinvest these funds in renewable energy and climate solutions, particularly those that support workers and frontline communities.
