In accordance with this acknowledgement, we recognize:
Whereas, World Refugee Day was established by the United Nations and is observed annually on June 20 to honor the courage, resilience, and contributions of refugees and displaced people around the world; and
Whereas, millions of individuals and families have been forced to flee their homes due to war, violence, persecution, human rights violations, environmental disasters, and other circumstances beyond their control; and
Whereas, seeking safety and the opportunity to rebuild one's life is a fundamental human aspiration, and refugees demonstrate extraordinary strength, perseverance, and hope in the face of adversity; and
Whereas, Portland is home to thousands of refugees, asylum seekers, and immigrant families who have enriched our city through their leadership, entrepreneurship, cultural traditions, professional expertise, and community engagement; and
Whereas, refugee community members contribute significantly to Portland's social, cultural, and economic vitality, helping create stronger neighborhoods, businesses, schools, and civic institutions; and
Whereas, organizations, service providers, volunteers, faith communities, and community leaders throughout Portland work collaboratively to support welcoming and inclusive communities where newcomers can thrive; and
Whereas, World Refugee Day provides an opportunity for all Portlanders to recognize the experiences of refugees, celebrate their contributions, and reaffirm our shared commitment to dignity, belonging, and opportunity for all; and
Whereas, the City of Portland recognizes that our diversity is one of our greatest strengths and that fostering welcoming communities benefits all who call Portland home;
Now, therefore, I, Keith Wilson, Mayor of the City of Portland, Oregon, the "City of Roses," do hereby proclaim June 20, 2026, to be World Refugee Day in Portland, Oregon, and encourage all residents to join in honoring refugees and displaced people, celebrating their contributions, and supporting efforts that build welcoming, inclusive, and thriving communities for everyone.
We are excited to come together once again for the annual World Refugee Day Walk in Portland. This community gathering is a celebration of resilience, belonging, and shared humanity.
