ECU reimagines Shakespeare with jazz-filled 'Twelfth Night'

When many audiences hear Shakespeare, they may think of his renowned plays and sonnets or his use of early modern English. However, East Carolina University's School of Theatre and Dance is bringing a fresh take to the stage with its upcoming production of "Twelfth Night."

Conceived by Kwame Kwei-Armah and Shaina Taub, this musical adaptation of William Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night" blends jazz, funk and soul with the playwright's original dialogue, reimagining the classic romantic comedy for a modern audience.

Director Trent Blanton said that in addition to incorporating music, the set design draws inspiration from the vibrant spirit of New Orleans.

"Twelfth Night," a musical adaptation of the Shakespeare comedy, unfolds in a vibrant, jazz-inspired setting filled with music, movement and playful energy.

"It begins with traditions like a jazz funeral and a second line. We take that inspiration, but we set it in the fictional town of Illyria with balconies, Spanish moss and a certain architectural style. The set is reminiscent of that New Orleans influence," he said.

Kwei-Armah and Taub's adaptation emphasizes the value of community and connection.

"The material has become popular in musical theater programs, community theaters and high schools because it is very accessible. We have tried to maintain that sense of community in our production," Blanton said.

That sense of community extends to the cast, which consists entirely of ECU students majoring in musical theatre.

"For many, it's their first time really dealing with Shakespearean text. Some students gravitate toward it easily, and others need more time," he said. "But that's the intent, to challenge students and give them something that will help in life."

As the first ECU/Loessin Playhouse show of the spring season, "Twelfth Night" sets a celebratory tone for the months ahead.

"Theater allows everyone to come together, laugh and enjoy something collectively. An hour and a half later, you walk out feeling better about your life. I hope this production sets that celebratory tone," Blanton said.

Blanton believes this production is the perfect introduction for those who have never experienced Shakespeare before.

"It's like a gateway to Shakespeare! This version makes the play more accessible to a wider audience. You don't need to worry: You will know what is going on. It is not your mom's Shakespeare. There is a lot of lowbrow humor and exciting elements," he said.

"Twelfth Night" will be performed in the McGinnis Theatre at 7:30 p.m. nightly with shows through Saturday night and a 2 p.m. Sunday matinee. Ticket information is available on the ECU Arts website.
