Mesquite launches “Give Wisely” campaign to help the unsheltered

Many North Texas cities including Mesquite have noticed a rise in homelessness in their communities.

To address this important issue, the City of Mesquite has launched a campaign encouraging residents to "Give Wisely."

"Well-meaning citizens who give cash or other items directly to the unsheltered may actually continue the cycle of homelessness," said Anthony Cao, Mesquite's Director of Housing and Community Services. "The best way to help is to work with us and our partners who have the expertise in getting the unhoused the long-term help they need."

To increase public awareness, the City has installed signs at key intersections in Mesquite urging people to "Give Wisely" instead of giving to panhandlers.

Researchers say that more people are experiencing homelessness in recent years because of economic hardships, the lack of affordable housing, mental health challenges and substance abuse issues.

The City of Mesquite has added staff, resources and non-profit partners to arrange transportation to shelters for unhoused individuals, connect them with support agencies, and help them reunite with family members or friends.

Non-profit partners include Sharing Life Community Outreach, The Bridge, Austin Street, Center of Hope, Union Gospel Mission, Housing Forward and The Stewpot.

Mesquite's approach to helping the unsheltered also includes better coordination between City departments including Police, Fire, Environmental Code, Public Works and Solid Waste, and a greater collaboration with the City of Garland to ensure that unhoused people are not simply shifting from one city to another.

"We are here to help all those who call our community home," Cao said. "Addressing homelessness helps improve public safety, public health and overall quality of life for everyone in the community."
