Des Moines, Iowa - Monday, April 27, 2026 - Des Moines residents picked up over 5,000 trees from the City of Des Moines' Tiny Trees program last Saturday.
If you missed the event or would like to pick up more trees, the Des Moines Public Works Department is now offering a second chance event this Saturday, May 2nd from 8 a.m. to noon at Historic City Hall (400 Robert D. Ray Drive). Residents who visit the event will be able to take home Tiny Trees for free - no registration is required. The trees are intended to be planted on private property in Des Moines.
"Tiny Trees is such a rewarding event because it adds thousands of trees to our urban canopy each year," Urban Forestry Project Manager Dan Just said. "As those trees grow, they will deliver benefits like clean air, stormwater absorption, reduced heating and cooling costs in addition to making our city more beautiful."
At the Tiny Trees second chance event, trees will be available on a first come, first serve basis.
Tree Species that may be available include:
Kentucky Coffeetree
Northern Pecan
Sugar Maple
Sycamore (Low Stock)
Redbud (Low Stock)
Wild Plum
White Pine
